In 1845 the German master watchmakers Ferdinand Al Lange, Julius Assmann, Ludwig Strasser, Johannes Durrstein and others settled in the region of Glashutte. All of these Watch Makers were awarded various gold medals at exhibitions and international competitions, thus creating the world wide reputation of Glashutte. At the start of the second world war manufacturers in Glashutte were still producing watches for the Navy and Air force. After the second world war the factories were in a bad state and production virtually ceased, however, the reunification of Germany in 1990 meant that the Glashutte tradition could be revived.
