In 1833 Antoine Lecoultre founded the manufacture that bears his name. Seen as a brilliant inventor he developed revolutionary tools for making pinions for watches and clocks as well as the millionometer, the most accurate measuring tool of his time.

Significantly, in 1847 Antoine Lecoultre developed the crown winding system, doing away with the need for a key to wind watch mechanisms and set time. In 1880 Edmund Jaeger (a renowned French watch maker) founds his company in Paris, it was the meeting between these two watch makers that led to the Jaeger LeCoultre brand that we know today.

Jaeger Lecoultre remains one of the major watch houses, producing watches and clocks of the highest quality. Probably their most famous creations are the atmos clock and the Reverso. The Reverso famously came about in response to a request by a polo player who wanted a watch that would not get damaged during mathches. The reverse has been in continuous production since 1931.
